DETROIT MOTOR SHOW: Porsche reprises Targa
Second oldest 911 model name returns with 1970-styled Targa unveiled in DetroitPorsche has turned back the clock to launch its latest 911 variant, the Targa.
Unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit overnight, the 2014-model Porsche 911 Targa features what's claimed to be world first roof technology, but reprises the brushed alloy roll hoop and soft-look roof panel of classic Targa models.
The wrap around glass bubble rear screen also returns in the new design which pays obvious homage to the original 1965 Targa concept and the car's 1967 production debut.
To be offered in all-wheel drive only but with a choice of standard and S mechanicals, the latest Targa champions a badge that has significant history associated with it. Only Carrera is older -- Targa even predates Turbo in Porsche's 911 timeline.
The new roof system is composed of two major parts, the soft-top and a combination of the rear window and engine cover. The latter moves up and rearwards to allow the former to stow in the area above the engine. The new Targa retains the +2 seating of 'normal' 911s.
The roof is only operable while stationary and takes around 19 seconds to cycle.
Porsche is unashamedly labelling the Targa as a niche model within the 911 range.
Power in the 911 Targa 4 is taken care of thanks to a 3.4-litre flat six producing 257kW of power and the Targa 4S sees this figure rise to
294kW thanks to the added displacement of its 3.8-litre flat six engine.
Other mechanical details are essentially unchanged from the Targa's coupe and cabriolet counterparts, but the novel roof system commands a premium of more than $25,000 over a regular 911 Carrera 4 models.
Pricing starts at $247,900 for the seven-speed manual 911 Targa 4 and $285,100 for the 911 Targa 4S, with the optional PDK transmission costing another $5950.
The Porsche 911 Targa is expected to arrive on our shores in mid-2014.
