DETROIT MOTOR SHOW: Volkswagen teases sleeker Jetta

Small sedan gets stylish makeover but a lack of right-hand drive will rule it out for Down Under

Volkswagen has teased its next-generation Jetta at an event in the US that seems to suggest the small German sedan will be far more stylish than the current version.

The single teaser shot, posted on US car blog motor1.com, shows a sleeker, more streamlined version of the current car that appears to distance itself further, style-wise, from the current Golf.

Looking more like a shrunken Arteon than Golf with a boot, the Jetta will be based on the latest version of the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform.

Developed chiefly for left-hand drive markets, the small Volkswagen sedan is soon to be discontinued in Australia following the news it will be no longer made in right-hand drive.

So far, this year Volkswagen has shifted just 1026 Jettas -- a 43 per cent decline on 2016.

The new version set to be unveiled at the Detroit motor show in January is thought to be based around a US-specific 1.4-litre turbo-petrol engine that will develop around 110kW. Later on, Volkswagen's 48-volt mild hybrid tech will join the range.
