Drive system upgrade for 4x4 Tritons
Pajero's Super Select drive system technology has transferred across to high-end Triton modelsMitsubishi has implemented a running change to the specification of the company's Triton 4x4 model range. Diesel VR, GLX-R and GLS models now feature the same Super Select drive system already available in Mitsu's Pajero SUV range.
The electrically-selectable system, which Mitsubishi claims takes some of the hard yakka out of offroading, operates in four modes: high-range two-wheel drive, high-range four-wheel drive, high-range four-wheel drive with locked centre differential and low-range four-wheel drive with locked centre diff.
In high-range two-wheel drive, the transfer case directs torque from the transmission directly to the rear differential, but when the driver selects one of the four-wheel drive modes, Super Select re-directs torque from the transmission via a synchromeshed transfer to the open centre differential.
As is the case with other SUV-based systems, Super Select allows the driver to move between the first three modes on the fly (thanks to the synchro facility), only requiring the driver stop the vehicle to select the low-range mode.
Mitsubishi will roll out the Super Select-equipped Tritons between now and the end of the year. The Triton GLX is the only 4x4 model which continues with the pre-upgrade 'Easy Select' system.
