Driving simulator monitors fatigue

An advanced new driving simulator can move through an area as large as four tennis courts to emulate real-life conditions

Toyota has developed an advanced driving simulator, which the company describes as the "world's biggest Playstation".

The computer-controlled simulator -- a dome with a diameter measuring 7.1m and housed inside a room as large as four tennis courts -- is intended to replicate real-world situations such as driver drowsiness and other scenarios that could impair judgement.

Inside the dome, which measures 4.5 metres high, a full-size car is mounted on a turntable which can rotate up to 330 degrees. The dome can move under its own impetus, through a longitudinal distance of 35m or a lateral distance of 20m. Maximum G-forces of 0.5g can be achieved inside the dome, which can also tilt at 25 degrees.

The entire inner surface of the dome is a giant video display through a 360 degree arc.

Based at Toyota's Higashifuji Technical Centre in Japan, the simulator will assist the company in its aim to "produce cars that never crash".
