Aussies will gain their first experience behind the wheel of a 2.0-litre EcoBoost Ford with next month's introduction of the advanced petrol engine in the mid-sized Mondeo.
For many of Ford's loyal fans the interest in this engine is its anticipated launch in the Falcon sedan early next year, but the Mondeo gets first bite of the cherry.
Turbocharged and direct-injected, the EcoBoost four replaces the Mondeo's 2.3-litre naturally-aspirated and port-injected four-cylinder petrol engine in the Zetec and Titanium grades, but not the LX Mondeo variants, which soldier on with the atmo engine.
Compared with the 2.3-litre, the EcoBoost engine adds $1500 to the purchase price of the car, but provides substantially stronger power and torque, while delivering considerable fuel savings in the combined-cycle test. Power and torque for the new engine — 149kW and 300Nm — compare very favourably with the 118kW and 208Nm produced by the 2.3. According to Ford, the new engine's figures represent a 26 per cent gain in power and 44 per cent improvement in torque.
At 8.0L/100km and 187g/km, the EcoBoost models' fuel use and CO2 emissions have been whittled down by 16 per cent (fuel) and 17 per cent (CO2), in contrast with the 2.3. All Ford's figures for the EcoBoost Mondeo are based on 95 RON premium ULP — as are the equivalent figures for the 2.3-litre engine.
According to Ford, the Mondeo will run on 91 RON unleaded, but the new engine has been 'optimised' for the higher-octane fuel and the company advises that filling up with 91 can be expected to result in 'minor loss of performance and economy'. Conversely, running the new car on 98 RON fuel may reduce fuel consumption further and also bolster the engine's output.
In part, the petrol Mondeo's improved economy stems from the adoption of a six-speed PowerShift transmission in lieu of the epicyclic automatic mated to the 2.3-litre engine. Built by German transmission specialist Getrag, the PowerShift transmission is a dual-clutch, self-shifting manual that operates like an auto, but is ultimately more efficient.
As reported by the Carsales Network back in March, the EcoBoost Mondeo should provide real-world performance close to that of the discontinued Mondeo XR5, given the lighter engine in the EcoBoost models, combined with the fast-shifting PowerShift transmission.
The EcoBoost Mondeo variants join the local Ford range in July.
