Eight drive-worthy Australian camping grounds to add to your hit list

Who needs a plane ticket when you have your trusty vehicle and the great outdoors to explore?

When the weather gets warmer, the tents come out. While jet-setting to another country might sound exciting, your next big adventure is right outside your doorstep. Australia has a magnitude of breathtaking camping sites that are perfect for venturing to with family or friends this summer. From beachfront destinations to outback oases, add these drive-worthy camping grounds to your summer hit list.

Byron Bay, NSW

Located right across from Tallow Beach, Bryon Bay’s Suffolk Beachfront Holiday Park is a family-friendly camping ground that’s great for hassle-free campers. Keep the little ones entertained with the children's playground and recreation area and cook up a storm at the camp kitchen. This camping ground caters to a wide range of vehicles, including all types of vans, camper trailers, motorhomes, and tents.

Cylinder Beach, Queensland

One of Minjerribah’s famous surf beaches is home to an incredibly spacious camping ground. Situated right on the beach, Cylinder Beach Camping Ground features stunning ocean views and lots of shade. It’s perfect for campers who love a morning dip or long sunset walks on the beach, as well as great for glampers, nature lovers, and everyone in between.

Uluru, NT

Home to one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks, Uluru is the ultimate summer camping ground, featuring bedroom cabins and both un-powered and powered tent sites. Whether you’re committing to the long but scenic drive from the east or travelling down from the north, the result, that is sleeping under the stars at Uluru (and the drive), is worth the effort and time. Ayers Rock Report Campground is open all year round, with certain amenities, like the resort pool and camping ground reception seasonally open.

Kosciuszko, NSW

For those looking for a complete off-the-grid experience, add Kosciuszko to your camping hit list. Perfect in both summer and winter, the Kosciuszko National Park is home to some of the best camping experiences. What the remote camping site lacks in amenities and utilities, it makes up for with scenic hills, gorgeous lakes, and unforgettable alpine hiking and biking tracks.

Lake Catani, Victoria

If you’re a fan of lakeside camping, then you’re going to love Lake Catani Campground. From its magnificent waterfalls and alpine landscapes, the family-friendly camping ground is one for the books. Find flushing toilets, hot showers, free gas barbecues and laundry sinks nearby and a picnic shelter that overlooks Lake Catani at the Lakeside Day Visitor Area.

Mungo National Park, NSW

If you’re looking for a camping site that will keep the whole family occupied, pay a visit to Mungo National Park. Spend your days kangaroo spotting or immersing yourself in the site’s rich Indigenous history, and nights stargazing around a campfire. The remote campground contains unpaved roads that can be accessed with a 2WD in clear, dry weather.

Warroora Station, WA

Sleep under the stars at Warroora Station, located an hour south of Coral Bay. The nature-based campground is situated right by the beach, making it a great way to beat the heat during summer. The unpowered camping sites are accessible with a 2WD, but a 4WD is required to access the beach. For those who aren’t tent-lovers, Warroora Station houses five accommodations that cater to all kinds of adventurers.

Kuitpo Forest, SA

After exploring the 3,600 hectares of gorgeous native bushlands and tall forest trees, pitch a tent or park your campervan among the Eucalypt woodland at Kuipto Forest. The Kuitpo Forest is just 45 minutes outside of Adelaide, in the rural township of Meadows, and is perfect for both camping families and solo adventurers. The nearby Forest hut accommodation is also great for nature lovers who don’t like sleeping in a tent.
