The MG Cyberster is inching closer to production, with a new report suggesting it will launch as part of MG’s centenary celebrations in 2024.
In a move that would mark a significant return to MG’s traditional sports car roots,
reports the two-seat MG Cyberster drop-top concept revealed in 2021 has been confirmed for production. The fully-electric two-door sports car first emerged at the Shanghai motor show in April last year – touted by many as the reborn MGB, complete with the “world’s first purely electric e-sports cockpit”.
At the time, a spokesperson for MG Motor Australia confirmed the availability of right-hand drive production and said Australia was very much on the radar for future sales.
“As part of our ‘Electric For Everyone’ strategy, MG Australia will now examine the Cyberster’s potential for the Australian and New Zealand markets,” the spokesperson said at the time.
Speaking with Autocar, senior MG officials cast new light on the Cyberster, promising an affordable new EV presence in previously untapped markets.
“We know we were the affordable sports car brand in the past, and now we are the new electric vehicle brand, and we will surprise you. We will be in markets that nobody has been in before,” a spokesman told Autocar.
MG’s UK design boss Carl Gotham went on to explain the production version will be slightly toned-down from the original concept shown at Shanghai but will offer a bold presence nonetheless.
“Sports cars are the lifeblood of the MG DNA, and the Cyberster is a hugely exciting concept for us,” Gotham told the publication.
Having gained an undeniable foothold in the mainstream new-car space, MG’s return to the affordable sports car segment has been in the works for some time.
First proof came with the 2017 MG E-Motion sports coupe concept, which never eventuated in production form despite strong intentions.
There are few official details available on the 2024 MG Cyberster. We have previously reported that it will be built on a new EV architecture and fitted with a powertrain that enables a range of up to 800km and offers supercar-rivalling pace, with the 0-100km/h sprint devoured in less than 3.0sec.
MG Motor Australia is keeping quiet on the subject for now. As they say in the classics, watch this space…
