Elon Musk teases Tesla pick-up

Tesla CEO gives glimpse of full-size pick-up with futuristic styling; expect the big EV ute to carry six and have a range up to 800km

Tesla chief Elon Musk has used his Twitter account to drop a single teaser image of the forthcoming Tesla pick-up truck the US car-maker is developing.

The obscure pic was claimed to have been teased during the unveiling of the Tesla Model Y yesterday, but since none of the journalists attending noticed, Musk resorted to Twitter to post the image.

It's not entirely clear what we're looking at, but the full-size all-electric ute features what looks like a full-length LED light bar that stretches across the leading edge of its bonnet.

And it appears the pure-electric Tesla truck will break with the firm's Russian doll approach to styling and get a braver squared-off look.

In fact, Musk himself says the new truck will wear "really futuristic-like cyberpunk, Blade Runner" styling.

Previously, despite its working class audience, Musk announced that the Tesla pick-up will get an advanced suspension system that automatically adjusts the rear rebound and compression damping according to the weight carried in the bay.

The battery-powered rival for pick-ups like the Ford F-150 will also come with a 360-degree camera and driver-assist features like self-parking.

Inside, the six-seat pick-up will share the Model 3's minimalism approach to cabin design, with a single screen used for the instrument panel. But to cash in on lifestyle buyers, expect a more luxurious interior than many of its rivals, which will be reflected by a far higher price point.

Little is known about the exact specification of the Tesla truck but it will share its powertrain with either the Model S or the larger still Tesla big-rig, offer a range of between 650-800km and near supercar-quick acceleration off the line.

Musk had originally announced via Twitter that the reveal of the first Tesla pick-up would occur this year, followed by an expected release in early 2020.
