Facelifted 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS shown in Europe

Even bigger battery, more range and more kit for German car-maker’s flagship electric limousine

A facelifted 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS has been revealed in Europe with a revised design that’s intended to make the flagship electric limousine more like its combustion-powered S-Class sibling.

The new look extends primarily to the grille, which now emulates that of the S-Class, while the three-pointed star badge has been moved from the grille to the bonnet in classic Mercedes-Benz fashion – also as per the S-Class.

An AMG-Line front bumper treatment rounds out the cosmetic changes, however, the styling updates are paired with some meaningful range and towing upgrades, all of which stem from a big new 118 kWh battery pack (up from 108.4kWh).

The German brand says the new powerpack adds up to 82km of extra range, meaning the most efficient versions of the EQS can now theoretically top 800km on a single charge.

“The maximum range of the EQS 450 4MATIC, for example, increases from 717 to 799km,” it said in a press release.

“This means an increase in range of more than 11 per cent.

“With a range of 683-822 kilometres, the EQS 450+ even exceeds the 800km mark.”

Meantime, for those who want to tow with their electric limousine, maximum braked towing capacity rises from 750kg to 1700kg – enough to “tow a horse trailer”, says Mercedes-Benz.

No changes have been made to any of the drive motors or powertrain configurations beyond the bigger battery, meaning outputs – in an Australian context at least – will stay put at 265kW/800Nm for the 450 4MATIC and 484kW/950Nm for the AMG-fettled 53 4MATIC+.

Inside the cabin you’ll find some extra chrome trim and more padding on the rear seats, plus more reclining adjustment, while the innovative MBUX Hyperscreen dash has been made standard across the range.

Other enhancements include the addition of a heat pump, improved regenerative braking system and the inclusion of automatic lane changing.

Mercedes-Benz Australia is yet to confirm when the new EQS will arrive Down Under, but odds are it won’t be until the end of the year or even the first half of next year, given European orders don’t open until April 25.

Euro pricing will be unaffected by the spec increase as the brand looks to increase sales in the region, though there’s no guarantee that’ll be the case here.
