Mild-hybrid tech for all combustion variants but PHEVs ruled out again for Australia
The upgraded 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE has been revealed globally, showcasing some subtle styling refinements, tweaked cabin features and electrified powertrains for every variant of the facelifted large luxury SUV range.
Local pricing and specification details are all yet to be locked in for our market, but Mercedes-Benz Australia has confirmed an August arrival for the facelifted GLE wagon and ‘coupe’ range, the exact composition of which remains unclear for the time being.
One thing we do know for sure though is the range will continue without any plug-in hybrid variants – unlike the European and North American markets that share three between them.
Odds are the local portfolio will largely mirror the current one, which encompasses the GLE 300d, 450, 400d, AMG 53 and AMG 63 S across both wagon and coupe body styles.
Speaking of appeal, every GLE variant has been treated to redesigned bumpers, refined lighting signatures and reworked alloy wheel designs, while GLE Coupes will come as standard with an AMG Line exterior pack that adds more aggressive intakes, diamond grille mesh and extra wheel-arch flaring.
The sharpened cosmetics are complemented within the cabin by the latest-generation touch-sensing steering wheel pinched from the Maybach GLS, an expanded array of trim colours and finishes, 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and the latest MBUX infotainment system (also spanning 12.3 inches), which now features wireless smartphone mirroring.
Recognising that most GLE owners spend all of their time driving on sealed or at least well-maintained dirt roads, Mercedes has rehashed its optional Off-Road Engineering Package to make it cheaper for those who actually plan on taking their vehicles off-road.
The revised off-road package now consists primarily of underbody protection and an extra 30mm of ground clearance when paired with the optional AIRMATIC air suspension.
Factor in the optional Parking Package’s upgraded 360-degree camera and the MBUX’s ‘off-road’ mode, and drivers will have access to ‘transparent hood’ technology that displays a virtual view of what’s happening under the front of the vehicle via the central display.

Because some GLE variants are capable of towing up to 3500kg, a new Towing Route Planner has been added to the satellite-navigation system to provide drivers with the most tow-friendly routes for their kind and size of trailer, taking into account road widths, weight limits and overpass heights.
Those not comfortable reversing with a trailer will also be able to take advantage of the updated (optional) Trailer Manoeuvring Assist function, which automatically regulates the steering angle up to a speed of 5km/h and uphill gradients of up to 15 per cent.
As alluded to above, every internal combustion GLE variant now features Mercedes’ proprietary 48V mild-hybrid system and integrated starter generator (ISG), which can intermittently contribute some extra grunt during hard acceleration.

Even without the help of the ISG, every powertrain besides the formidable AMG 63 S has been given a power bump of some description, with some being more modest than others.
Starting from the bottom of the range, the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel GLE 300d has scored an extra 18kW/50Nm to now churn out a hearty 198kW/550Nm, whereas the 450 six-cylinder turbo-petrol nabs an extra 10kW to boost its outputs to 280kW/500Nm.

No extra kiloWatts have been gifted to the angry AMG 53, but the high-performance six-banger has been given a healthy dollop of extra torque (+40Nm) to bump total outputs up from 320kW/520Nm to 320kW/560Nm, shaving 0.3 seconds off its claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time – now 5.0sec flat.
