Falcon MkII dips below 200g/km CO2 figure

Ford Australia's FG Falcon Mark II becomes the first Aussie-built large sedan to crack the 200 grams of CO2 per kilometre barrier

The recently released Ford FG Falcon Mark II has arrived with little fanfare, but deserves more kudos than we first thought.

In addition to its sharp pricing, revised equipment levels and improved fuel economy, FG Falcon Mk II EcoLPi has also earned the title of Australia’s first locally-built large car to deliver a sub-200g/km CO2 rating.

At 199g/km (and 12.3L/100km) the LPG-powered Falcon XT EcoLPi is Australia’s most environmentally sensitive family-sized car. It leads the six-cylinder Falcon range in reducing CO2 emissions by 4g/km, making the 20-strong Falcon sedan and ute line-up now greener than ever before.

Falcon G6, G6E and XR6 EcoLPi models also shed valuable grams from their respective emissions figures, all dropping 2g/km to 202g/km.

Normally aspirated petrol-powered Falcon MkII models remain unchanged in both sedan and utility bodystyle, with the exception of the automatic XR6 Turbo Ute. This model drops 0.1L/100km to 12.4L/100km on the combined cycle, its CO2 emissions cut by 7g/km to 292g/km.

The Mark II upgrade will also see Falcon fitted with a four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine for the first time. Dubbed EcoBoost, the pricier four-pot Falcon is slated to arrive early in 2012, but to date Ford is tight-lipped about output, fuel consumption and emissions figures. motoring.com.au has previously estimated Falcon EcoBoost’s combined fuel economy figure to be in the vicinity of 8.1L/100km.

NB: All figures quoted in the above article are obtained from controlled tests using ADR81/02. It should be noted that real-world consumption and emissions figures will vary depending on your driving style, environmental conditions, vehicle equipment, condition and use.
