Autumn special on EV? Nissan slashes the price of its LEAF EV

Autumn is traditionally the time when leaves fall. And Nissan has taken the cue -- literally.

The price of the Japanese marque's all-electric LEAF has been slashed from $46,990 drive-away to $39,990. This decrease takes the total discount offered on the car to close to $12,000 compared to its launch price of $51,500.

Nissan has registered just 39 LEAFs April year to date. In 2012 it sold a total 77.

Nissan says the new pricing is intended to: "Capture the attention of buyers considering an EV who might have previously been put off by the comparatively higher purchase price".

In conjunction with the sub $40K pricetag, Nissan is offering a weekly repayment offer: "A new Nissan LEAF from only $85 per week with a 1.9% p.a comparison rate".

In 2012 it announced retail incentives to stimulate sales of the EV. That incentive was meant to end on March 31.

It says the latest pricing structure and another round of retail incentives are valid only until October 30 this year.
