Fast Subaru Levorg STI Sport previewed

Prototype reported to preview production car with more than 220kW making it a natural VW Golf R-rival

Subaru has teased images of a sleeker, faster Levorg Prototype STI Sport it will reveal at the Tokyo Auto Salon next month.

Based on the Levorg Prototype unveiled back in November at the Tokyo motor show, the STI Sport introduces a new bodykit, sportier wheels and STI badging.

It's not been confirmed yet by the Japanese car-maker, but it's thought the new STI Sport badge will be positioned between the current WRX and full-fat STI.

Instead of the being powered by the 1.8-litre turbocharged flat-four 'boxer' engine, the production Levorg STI Sport will get a larger 2.0-litre that should produce around 220kW.

With that level of power, and a healthy weight reduction courtesy of the Levorg Subaru Global Platform, the Levorg should be capable of a sub-six second sprint to 100km/h.

Set to be auto-only, to ensure the sporty Levorg gets Subaru's full-suite of Eyesight safety systems, it's thought the fastest STI will come with an all-new electrified petrol turbo and be the only model in the range to get the option of a six-speed manual.

Scheduled to be launched in Japan in the second half of 2020 with the rest of the Levorg range, it's hoped the STI Sport version will be part of the Australian launch that's likely to occur in 2021.
