Ferrari 296 GT3 racer up for a fight

New 488 GT3 replacement said to produce 20 per cent more downforce while being faster and easier to drive flat-out

Ferrari has introduced the first race car based on its latest Ferrari 296 GTB and it brings more power, a lower centre of gravity and 20 per cent more downforce than the Ferrari 488 GT3 racer it replaces.

Under the rear boot lid, the all-new Ferrari 296 GTB road car's 120-degree 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 but has been detuned from 610kW/740Nm to just 441kW/710Nm to meet strict FIA GT3 race regulations.

Most of the power drop has come from junking the 296 GTB's hybrid bits, which also helps to slash weight down to 1250kg.

Tailoring the Ferrari for the track is double-wishbone suspension at both ends with five-way adjustable dampers. The GT3 racer’s wheelbase has also been stretched to help stability on track, while wheel sizes drop from the stock 20s on the 296 GTB to more modest 18-inch versions for the racer.

The brakes on the 296 GT3 remain huge, with 400mm discs up front clamped down by six-piston callipers, while at the rear there are 332mm rotors and four-piston callipers.

Helping ensure the 296 GT3 is far faster on track, designers have had a total rethink when it comes to the aerodynamic properties of the road-going version. That explains the big front splitter, huge swan-neck rear spoiler, fender vents, new engine cover, enormous rear diffuser and pair of fresh mirrors.

Inside, there's a F1-inspired steering wheel, Sabelt seats, adjustable pedals and lots of exposed carbon-fibre.

There's also a new air-conditioning system that’s said to provide adequate ventilation however hot the conditions.

Set to go racing in 2023, Ferrari says its all-new 296 GT3 racer has already undergone tens of thousands of kilometres of testing at its Fiorano test track since last April.
