Ferrari facelifts track-only FXX K

FXX K Evo gets bigger aero and lighter weight

Ferrari has released pictures of an updated FXX K claimed to offer 23 per cent more downforce at 200km/h than the previous model.

Launched over the weekend at the Mugello race circuit in Italy, the FXX K Evo is a significant re-working of the FXX K body with the sole aim to give the track-only hypercar the equivalent aero performance of a real GT3/GTE championship race car.

Said to be the outcome of more than 12 months of complex simulation and wind tunnel work, the FXX K Evo has numerous aerodynamic enhancements including a redesigned fixed twin-blade rear wing, two side fins and a central fin.

Beneath the body, both front and rear bumpers have been replaced by sleeker items and even the suspension has been reshaped to reduce drag and turbulence.

As a result, Ferrari says the updated FXX K Evo produces 23 per cent more downforce than the previous FXX K and 75 per cent more than the LaFerrari hypercar (on which the FXX K is based).

This translates into 640kg of downforce at 200km/h and 830kg at the race car's maximum speed.

Further enhancing performance, Ferrari has pared some weight for the Evo version of the FXX K, but the exact number of kilos lost hasn't been detailed.

Inside, there's a new steering wheel which incorporates both gear shift paddles and controls for the kinetic recovery system (KERS).

A larger 6.5-inch display has also been added and this broadcasts the rear camera view, as well as the KERS status.

Developed over 5000km of track testing and 15,000km of durability and reliability runs, the FXX K Evo retains the 772kW/900Nm V12 petrol-electric hybrid powertrain and still channels its power to the road using the LaFerrari's seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Ferrari has not announced how many FXX K Evos it plans to build but says, for an undisclosed sum, the updated Evo pack can be added to the 40 existing FXX K models.

Back when the FXX K went on sale, it was rumoured to cost around $US3 million ($A4 million). For after sales support, the famous Italian car maker offered buyers two years of free factory-backed motorsport support and eligibility to use the FXX K in the one-make XX racing program which, in 2018/2019, consists of nine events at race circuits all over the world.
