Fiat is celebrating the occasion of the 500's 60th anniversary in 2017 with a limited edition '500 Anniversario' model due here before the end of the year.
Although Fiat had marketed a model named 500 since the mid-1930s, the anniversary model recalls the 'Nuova 500' that went into production in July 1957 and inspired the current model's design.
The importer has not revealed what the 500 Anniversario will cost buyers, but has announced basic specification for the car, which is based on the 1.2-litre 500 Lounge variant. Featuring 16-inch alloy wheels, 'exclusive interiors', vintage logos and additional chrome trim, the Anniversario model will be offered in a choice of three colours: Riviera Green, Sicilia Orange and Gelato White. The seats, which are adorned an embroidered '500' logo, are upholstered in a horizontally-striped trim that recaptures the 'Dolce Vita' zeitgeist of 1960s Italian design.
Comfort and convenience features fitted will include Bluetooth connectivity and navigation. Just 60 units will be allocated for the Australian market.
"The Fiat 500 Anniversario Edition offers a glimpse into the iconic heritage of the Fiat brand and pays tribute to the vehicle which launched 60 years ago," says Fulvio Antonelli, Head of Fiat Brand Australia.
"The Anniversario is a modern Italian-made hatchback that represents a reworking of the vehicle's unmistakable design signature."
