Sergio Marchionne, Fiat Chrysler Automotive (FCA) CEO, has announced that by 2021 its brands will not offer a single diesel-powered vehicle in Europe.
According to the boss of FCA -- which includes the Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Fiat, Jeep, Maserati and RAM brands -- the company sees diesel engine technology as increasingly challenged by both future regulation and consumer attitudes.
Announcing that FCA will invest €9 billion ($A14b) on electrification through to 2022, the car-making giant says it will develop mild hybrid, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full pure-electric powertrains to fill the gap left by diesels.
The Jeep brand, for example, will be offered with eight-plug-in hybrids and five mild hybrids by 2022, by which time every model will be available with some level of electrification.
