Volkswagen has issued a series of press pics for its Golf GTD, the high-performance sports diesel variant that will pair up with petrol GTI to top off the seventh generation Golf model range. The manufacturer has disclosed in a press release accompanying the images that the Golf GTD is capable of a top speed around 230km/h and a 0-100km/h time of 7.5 seconds, but its fuel consumption in the NEDC combined-cycle test is as low as 4.2L/100km – an improvement of 0.9L/100km. Power is improved and now peaks at 135kW and torque is rated at 380Nm, which is 30Nm more than the current model's. The GTD will be offered with a manual transmission or optional DSG, and an XDS electronic locking diff will provide optimal traction channelling the drive to the 17-inch front alloy wheels.
Fuel efficiency is boosted by a new auto-stop/start system – a first for the Golf GTD – and the new car will recover battery power from brake energy regeneration. Volkswagen has developed a sound actuator for the new model. Located in the engine bay, the sound actuator generates an engine noise to suit whichever drive mode profile has been chosen (Normal/Eco or Sport). This noise is piped into the cabin, but is inaudible from outside the car. It ensures the Golf GTD can meet all noise and emissions standards, but supplies an engine note to match the driver's preferences.
Comfort and convenience features fitted as standard include climate control, infotainment touchscreen, ambient lighting, three-spoke multi-function steering wheel with flat bottom and brushed stainless steel for pedal and footrest trim.
Safety features as standard for the Golf GTD include driver fatigue system, Post-Collision Braking, bi-xenon headlights and cornering lights in the front airdam. Volkswagen will offer the new car in a selection of colours, including the popular 'Tornado Red', 'Black' and 'Pure White'.
