Aussies young and old have been taking the easy life of camping and caravanning across this wide brown land for decades thanks to the #vanlife mantra. With holidays set to be restricted to our own backyard for the foreseeable future, there has never been a better time to give a road trip based camping adventure a go. The Hemsworths have even joined the movement!
If you want the freedom of camping with the conveniences of caravanning, why not split the difference and choose a campervan. Campervans (which are basically commercial vans turned into a mini home) are easy to drive and park, and require little set-up so you can just back one onto the beach, lift the tailgate and enjoy the sunset from the rear bed!
There are plenty available for sale already converted and finished to the highest quality, others finished with the bare essentials and others that are perfect for you to put your own mark on (convert from scratch). We’ve put together a list of five campervans available to buy on carsales to get you on your way.
A real favourite for nostalgia and wannabe hippies. The VW Kombi van became a symbol of the OG #vanlife of the swinging sixties across the world with it transporting young and old to events like Woodstock. By the ‘70s it became a status symbol for surfers across the coasts of Australia with the ability to load the boards on top and everything, and everyone inside. The model has evolved and changed over the years and the original T2 Kombi has now become the Transporter. Less of a hippie-mobile and more of a ‘do anything’ van.

The Ford Transit van has been synonymous for tradies and postal deliveries in Australia for decades. Its unique box design combined with a high roof and big barn doors make it the perfect DIY campervan too. Many commercial vans in the 21st century have been given a campervan option pack by converters and brands, so keep an eye out. But if you want to give a DIY conversion a go, the Transit is one of the grooviest vans out there.

By far the most popular work van in Australia, the Toyota HiAce also has skin in the game when it comes to campervans. While some have used the cargo based windowless van to create their campervan dream, others have used the more window friendly HiAce Commuter model to do so. Just like every other Toyota out there, these vans seem to go on and on and on forever.

For those looking for a campervan that has a bit more brand cache in the car and SUV world, maybe a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is more to your liking. The Sprinter is a fan favourite in the VIP transportation and winery tours game with its signature German quality and three-point star badge. Like the Transit, it benefits from a high roof so living and holidaying across Australia will be a bit more luxurious inside with the addition of the extra space. Some Sprinters have been given the high-end campervan treatment and include niceties such as a TV, mini-kitchen with fridge and a full-size shower!

For those looking for a cheap and easy DIY campervan option, nothing beats an old Mitsubishi Express van. While the van has been reincarnated in 2020 thanks to a tie-up with Renault, the old school box van is as far from France as you could get. A favourite with tradies and big families in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, the Express could be your ticket to the easy low-cost DIY #vanlife.
