The long-awaited Suzuki Jimny five-door has been spotted in India without any camouflage and wearing a new Kinetic Yellow hero colour, apparently as part of a promotional video shoot.
Although it’s yet to be officially confirmed by Suzuki, the first long-wheelbase Jimny has been spied several times wearing camouflage and these images come less than a month before Auto Expo 2023 – India’s biggest motor show – where the hotly anticipated five-door compact SUV is expected to make its global debut.
This particular image was uncovered by Autocar India on social media, but the original post has since been deleted.
As we know from previous spy pics, the five-door Jimny looks like an elongated clone of the three-door – right down to its alloy wheel design – but incorporates shorter front doors and a small rear side window.
Previous intel leaks have suggested the five-door Jimny, which comes courtesy of the Japanese small-car brand’s long-time Indian partner Maruti Suzuki, will have an extra 300mm added to its wheelbase to accommodate the rear doors and necessary rear passenger space.
Drive is set to come from the same 75kW/130Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that powers the popular the three-door Jimny, and both manual and automatic versions are anticipated to be offered in the vast majority of markets.
Suzuki Australia has spoken previously about its interest in securing the bigger Jimny for our market and a January reveal suggests a local launch could come as soon as the second half of 2023.
“I will say Suzuki Australia does have its hand held high if there is ever a possibility of this variant in future, as per my previous statements in 2019 when asked if there will be a five-door variant available,” Suzuki Australia general manager Michael Pachota told carsales back in 2020, when rumours of the five-door first emerged.
We’ll have to wait at least until its expected official reveal on January 13 before we know whether the stretched Jimny will indeed make it Down Under, but you can bet Suzuki Australia remains keen on what could be an even more popular vehicle than the Jimny three-door, which continues to be the subject of scalping amid tight supplies.
