Maserati Grecale fleet creates huge trident

Trident stunt took more than 80 prototypes to achieve as Maserati gears up for crucial SUV launch

Maserati has created a huge trident out of 80 examples of the upcoming 2022 Maserati Grecale as part of the build-up to the SUV's launch early next year.

Said to measure more than 100 metres long, Maserati claims the gathering of Grecales to form the famous brand's familiar trident logo was a "record-breaking shot", but did not disclose how.

Currently, Maserati claims there's around 250 prototypes testing in Japan, the US, UAE and China, plus others racking up development miles in Finland and Italy.

Originally, the Italian Porsche Macan rival was set to be officially unveiled on November 16 before the world debut was scrapped over production delays related to the global semi-conductor shortage.

First teased back in 2018, it's now thought the Australian launch won't happen until late 2022 at the earliest.

When it arrives, Maserati's first mid-size SUV is set to be introduced with a base price of around $100,000 that should see it instantly become the brand's best seller, accounting for as much as 70 per cent of all global sales by 2025.

Maserati has long promised its all-new mid-size luxury SUV will bring Level 3 autonomous driving capability, a 50:50 front/rear weight balance and a class-leading power-to-weight ratio.

Similar in size to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, with which it shares its Giorgio rear/all-wheel drive platform and its production facility in Cassino, Italy, the Maserati Grecale will be offered with the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol mild-hybrid powertrain as the Ghibli Hybrid.

But the most powerful Trofeo version will pack a detuned version of the 463kW/730Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol ‘Nettuno’ V6 that powers the Maserati MC20 supercar.

An all-electric version is also expected to be added to the range down the track.
