Ford Mondeo gets SYNC 3

Ford updates its Mondeo medium hatch and wagon with running changes

It’s not a new model year and wears the rather confusing moniker of 2016.75MY, but the latest Mondeo landing in Ford dealers this month does benefit from a number of running changes.

The key change is the adoption of Ford’s latest infotainment and human machine interface, SYNC 3.

Ford claims the SYNC 3 communications and entertainment system delivers faster performance, “conversational voice recognition, intuitive smartphone-like touch screen and an easier to understand graphic interface”.

The new 8.0-inch touchscreen interface also gets smartphone-style pinch and swipe capability on some functions.

There are other changes too: ‘At-a-glance’ access to phone, audio and navigation; static Home button in the top-left corner of subsequent screens; and soft ‘buttons’ for Audio, Climate, Phone, Navigation, Apps and Settings are visible at all times.

Ford says Mondeo pricing is unchanged across the range.

“Mondeo has always led the way in terms of its technology and fuel efficiency, being the very first Ford available in Australia powered by EcoBoost engine technology. The addition of SYNC 3 makes this outstanding vehicle an even more attractive choice,” said Graeme Whickman, CEO and President, Ford of Australia.

Alas the sales for Mondeo don’t reflect Mr Whickman’s enthusiasm. In 2015, just 2120 Mondeos were sold Down Under. Both Mazda’s 6 and Subaru’s Liberty outsold the Ford comprehensively. Year to date June 30 (2016), the Blue Oval has redressed the balance to some extent, growing its Mondeo sales (+122%) against YOY falls for its two main private market protagonists.

One advantage the Mondeo has over the Liberty (at least) is the choice of a wagon version. The Ford also offers both EcoBoost (turbo-petrol) and TDCi (turbo-diesel) powertrain options.
