Ford Australia has confirmed hundreds of 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 owners will receive a $5400 windfall following an error in its national marketing material.
The first 450 buyers of the new performance flagship, which landed in May, will have the option of a $5400 cash-back offer or three years’ free servicing and an exclusive track day after Ford conceded it got the specifications of Australian vehicles wrong in its original online and brochure material.
The company will also offer a full refund in what amounts to a $2.4 million mea culpa.
As carsales reported in May, Ford erroneously said the Mach 1 flagship – priced from $83,365 plus on-road costs – would be fitted standard with a Torsen differential, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, fog lights and branded floor mats.
The first 450 examples were sold on this proviso before the details were amended ahead of the second batch of 350 vehicles reaching the market.
In a statement, Ford said: “Over the past few weeks we have contacted our Mach 1 customers who ordered prior to 29 April 2021 to advise them of the (equipment) differences and to offer a special Ford Performance Experience and up to three years’ free scheduled servicing on their Mach 1, to help alleviate any disappointment resulting from our error.
“Now that we’ve had these discussions, over the next couple of days we’ll be writing to Mach 1 customers who ordered prior to 29 April to outline all options available, which now include: a cash payment of $5400; or up to three years’ free scheduled servicing and a Ford Performance Experience; or a full refund of their deposit (or purchase price).”
For those who ordered their Mach 1 after April 29, Ford said: “We are pleased to extend a goodwill offer of up to three years’ free scheduled servicing and Ford Performance Experience. Those customers will also receive a letter outlining this, over the next couple of days.”
The option of a $5400 cash-back offer has seemingly been well-received by Mach 1 buyers. One Mach 1 owner, listed as kypez on Ford Forums, welcomed the move.
“Ford initially offered three services and a track day as compensation which many of us thought wasn’t great,” kypez wrote.
“Now they’re offering $5400 refunds to all customers which is just brilliant! Kudos to Ford for doing this! Makes the car incredible value for money.”
