Ford recalls more than 3000 Transit vans

Potential fire risk if water pump overheats in blue oval brand’s commercials

Ford Australia has issued a nation-wide recall for a total of 3122 late-model Transit vans due to a potential water pump failure that could lead to an engine fire.

The recall affects Ford Transit and Transit Custom vehicles sold Down Under between January 23, 2016 and July 27, 2019, in which a 15-amp fuse protects the electronic run-on water pump (ROWP) that’s supposed to aid engine cooling once the vehicle has been switched off.

But in the recall, Ford says that if the ROWP fails the 15A fuse will not prevent the ROWP from overheating. In extreme cases, this could cause components and wiring to melt and/or lead to an engine compartment fire.

The manufacturer says it will contact owners to organise a free inspection and repair. Click here to find out if your Transit or Transit Custom in involved in this recall.

This week’s Transit recall follows the call back of 21,000 Ford Ranger and Everest Bi-Turbo models in June to fix a software fault with their 10-speed automatic transmissions – the only other Ford recall this year.
