The Geneva motor show in March might be remembered for its show of supercar strength, but this week’s Frankfurt show will go down as an international automotive extravaganza that presented more accessible metal that any show we can remember.
Sure, there was no shortage of futuristic concepts, led by Audi’s wacky Lamborghini-based Nanuk quattro super-crossover, Volvo’s not so adventurous Concept Coupe and, at the other end of the show car scale, Toyota’s too-wild-to-believe 300kW Yaris Hybrid-R.
And yes, there was also the obligatory quota of high-performance production models, led by Porsche’s gob-smackingly powerful yet efficient 918 Spyder, almost as amazing was BMW's i8 super-hybrid and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, which is officially only a concept (yeah, right).
The usual Italian supercar suspects weren’t staying home either, of course, with Ferrari eking more power from its 458 Italia coupe to produce the 445kW ‘Speciale’ and Lamborghini launching its most extreme Gallardo ever, the LP 570-4 Squadra Corse.
Naturally, the global crossover boom was also reflected, but tempered with the fitment of super-frugal hybrid drivetrains to make them more socially acceptable. Two prime examples of production-intent SUV concepts were the Jaguar C-X17 and Lexus LF-NX.
Other SUVs headed for showrooms soon were also revealed for the first time, including all-new small crossovers in the Kia Niro, Suzuki iV-4 and Nissan X-TRAIL.
Mainstream production models from all the major manufacturers also debuted at the 65th Frankfurt show, including BMW’s new X5, Volkswagen Golf R and the new Mazda3.
But, to be honest, we’re tired of creating all these live links to previous stories, so see below for the full list of Frankfurt show debuts and click on the links at the bottom to go straight to our Frankfurt show coverage.
