Q30, the car with which Infiniti will tackle the likes of BMW’s 1 Series, Audi’s A3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA and A-Class models has broken cover. Previewed via this image just minutes ago, the Q30 will be officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 10.
Though strictly a concept, motoring.com.au understands the production version of the car will closely resemble its show-car counterpart. It is the result of the alliance between Nissan’s prestige brand and Mercedes-Benz. Underneath the trademark ‘fishy’ Infiniti design language is the platform and running gear of Mercedes’ A/B-Class cars.
Q30 will be the second major release of the alliance – the upcoming Q50 medium prestige second uses Mercedes-Benz four-cylinder turbo-petrol and turbo-diesel powertrains.
Infiniti says the Q30 Concept -- previously seen in a sketch -- “signals the contemporary design vision for a compact Infiniti vehicle which will target a new generation of premium customers”. It claims the vehicle, the work of Infiniti internal design team led by Executive Design Director Alfonso Albaisa, is not simply a premium hatch but sits in a different segment. It says the car’s stance is higher and therefore will appeal to a different group of customers.
The design “embodies Infiniti’s vision to deliver head-turning design, innovative materials with precise fit and finish and passionate craftsmanship, while provoking a radical shift in the premium compact segment,” the company claims.
“The shape of the Infiniti Q30 Concept deliberately challenges categorisation – not a coupe, not a hatch and not a crossover but a fusion of the three body styles. It is designed for younger customers seeking an alternative to traditional premium compact vehicles and open to convention-challenging approaches,” says the PR blurb.
