GM Europe has released pictures of its all-new, 11th-generation Opel Astra Sports Tourer ahead of its official reveal at next week’s Frankfurt motor show.
Measuring in at 4702mm long, 1871mm wide and standing 1499mm tall, the new Astra wagon isn’t far off the dimensions of the old model but is said to offer more space for passengers and luggage with the driver benefitting from 26mm more headroom.
In the rear passengers gain 28mm more headroom while total cargo capacity expands to 1630 litres.
Weighing in up to an incredible 200kg lighter than the car it replaces, Opel says its engineers cut 20 per cent from the body shell's weight alone.
Featuring a petrol and diesel engine range that spans 74-147kW, the Astra wagon will come with both the recent 110kW turbocharged petrol four and the latest 147kW ‘Whisper’ 2.0-litre turbo-diesel.
Inside, the new Astra wagon will have the hatch’s all-new infotainment system that’s compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new system also comes with its own in-car Wi-Fi hot spot.
Holden has still to confirm whether we’ll get either the 11th-gen hatch or wagon after the Australian-made Cruze dies in 2017.
One possibility is the Opel Astra will become Holden's small hatch, while the new Cruze goes solo as a sedan.
When contacted by motoring.com.au, Mark Flintoft, product communications manager at Holden, remained tight-lipped on the subject.
"We have no announcements to make regarding our future product at this time," he said. "Holden is committed to leveraging GM's global portfolio to provide the best vehicles for Australia."
