The latest incarnation of a model that arguably brought most of Fiat's success in recent years will take to the stage at his month's Frankfurt motor show.
That model, the new Panda, will arrive bigger, more comfortable and better equipped than the model it replaces. Now measuring 3650mm long, 1640mm wide and 1550mm high, Panda promises more interior space as well as one of the largest cargo compartments in its class.
The flexible third-generation Panda is powered by a range of TwinAir two-cylinder engines offering 48 and 63kW. Both are equipped as standard with idle stop-start technology. A 51kW four-cylinder version completes the petrol engine range at launch, but Fiat says a 1.3-litre MultiJet 2 turbodiesel offering 59kW will also be offered in due course.
At launch, the new Panda will be front-wheel drive only, but a four-wheel drive version is planned. Sources say this four-wheel drive capable framework could underpin a new, smaller Jeep. Time will tell.
Safety equipment extends to four airbags, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, seatbelt load limiters and pretensioners, ISOFIX child seat preparation, head rests in all seating positions and the latest must-have daytime running lamps.
Technical kit includes Fiat's Blue&Me-TomTom LIVE infotainment system which is smart phone compatible and operated by steering wheel-mounted remote controls.
At this stage, Fiat's Australian importer ATECO says it has no plans to bring Fiat Panda to Australia.
The Frankfurt International Motor Show runs from September 13 to 25.
