Peugeot has uncovered a wild new concept car that could herald the release of a 308 hot hatch that slams out no less than 199kW and 330Nm of torque.
Those outputs – courtesy of the PSA Peugeot Citroen group’s latest 1.6-litre THP four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine – are the same as those delivered by the French brand’s RCZ R coupe due here next April and approach those of Volkswagen’s new Golf R, which also arrives here next year. But while the Mk7 Golf R’s 2.0-litre turbo engine outputs 220kW/380Nm – enough for it to sprint to 100km/h in a claimed 4.9 seconds – Peugeot makes no performance claims for the 308 R and its downsized turbo-four, other than saying it consumes just 6.3L/1200km.
Based on the all-new 308 five-door hatchback, which will also make its world debut at the Frankfurt motor show on September 10 and goes on sale here in July next year, the 308 R concept drives its front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Both the configuration and reveal strategy are the same as those Peugeot employed for the smaller 208 GTi hot hatch, which comes with a lower-output (147kW/275Nm) version of the same 1.6 THP engine, went on sale here earlier this month and was revealed as a concept alongside the standard 208 at last year’s Geneva show. Technical features of the 308 R concept include a Torsen front differential to quell torque steer, a 26mm-lower ride height, 30mm-wider front wheel track, bigger 380mm front and 330mm rear Alcon brake discs with four-piston callipers and huge 19-inch alloy wheels with 235/35-section tyres.
Naturally, the R-badged 308 also ups the ante in terms of style, via completely new body panels except for the roof and tailgate, a more aggressive front bumper with larger air intakes, lower side skirts and a beefier rear bumper.
Meantime, Peugeot has also revealed the 208 Hybrid FE concept ahead of the Frankfurt show. The hybrid 208 hatch employs a 50kW 1.2-litre turbo-petrol triple and a 30kW electric motor, which together with a 20 per cent weight reduction (to just 780kg) are claimed to provide 0-100km/h acceleration in eight seconds and average fuel consumption of just 2.1L/100km.
At the same time, Peugeot has also revealed facelifted versions of both the production 3008 and 5008, which will also debut at Frankfurt in two weeks before they go on sale here next March.
Both the new-look small crossover and seven-seat wagon come with a host of interior and exterior cosmetic changes – but no significant mechanical upgrades.
