Volkswagen has confirmed, via the medium of Facebook, that it will reveal an all-new second-generation Tiguan SUV at next week's Frankfurt motor show by posting a picture of the veiled crossover on its Wolfsburg production line.
Little else was announced with the teasing pic, but we already know that the car-maker plans to replace the seven-year old SUV with not one, but three new compact crossovers and all are confirmed for Australia.
As we've reported, the new Tiguan will grow considerably in size and include a long-wheelbase seven-seat version for the first time, as well as a sleek four-seat CC ‘coupe’ that’s based on the Detroit motor show concept.
Confirmed to go on sale here late next year, the new Tiguan will be followed by LWB and CC models in Australia some time in 2017.
The broader SUV range of Tiguans will allow VW to cash in on Australia's booming SUV market and help it rival top-sellers like the Mazda CX-3 and CX-5, and upcoming replacements for the CX-7 and CX-9.
All Tiguans will be based on Volkswagen's latest rigid and lightweight MQB platform that should carve well over 100kg from the current car’s kerb weight, making the new model be significantly more efficient.
The all-new Tiguan will also come with either front- and four-wheel drive and, for the first time, should offer a more advanced version of the current Golf GTE’s plug-in hybrid powertrain, at least in Europe.
