It’s no secret the world’s pissed at Subaru for axing the WRX STI, and while the brand slowly seems to be acknowledging its mistake, there’s no immediate remedy for anyone outside of Japan.
Prices of ‘used’ VA-series STIs went stratospheric when Subi announced there’d be no VB STI, especially when referring to the limited-run EJ25 Final Edition, of which just 75 examples were imported to Australia.
Having retailed from $62,440 plus on-roads when new, some low-miles Final Editions were listed on carsales for an eye-watering $230,000 as scalpers looked to make an easy but mighty profit.
Things have settled down a bit since then (May 2022) and the number of Final Editions lurking in the classifieds has dropped considerably, but all three of the current listings are priced around or above $100,000.
The rarest and equal-most expensive of them at $105,000 is this ‘Crystal Black Silica’ example in Queensland with a demo-like 268km showing on the odometer.
Completely stock and one of only 10 black Final Editions to make it Down Under, vehicle 45/75 is being sold unregistered in literal as-new condition with a certificate of authenticity, full logbooks and ceramic coating.
Many would argue the ‘WR Blue Pearl’ examples are more desirable, and they obviously were when new since 50 of the 75-unit allocation donned the iconic hero colour; the remaining 25 comprising 15 Crystal White Pearls and 10 Crystal Black Silicas.
The STI EJ25 Final Edition is defined by its exclusivity and unique appointments intended to make it the premier derivative of its lineage, save for the legendary 22B of course.
Compared to the STI spec.R AWD it was based on, the swansong added ‘Final Edition’ exterior badging, gold 19-inch BBS aluminium wheels, silver Brembo brake callipers, interior stitching and seatbelts, faux carbon cabin inserts, Recaro bucket seats, an Ultrasuede steering wheel, black mirrors and bumper trim along with a red grille insert.
No extra power or torque was extracted from its turbocharged 2.5-litre ‘Boxer’ engine, with outputs remaining steady at 221kW/407Nm and still sent to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission and variable centre differential.
