The final update of Ford's Aussie-designed SUV, the Territory, will match the ZF HP21 automatic transmission to the venerable 4.0-litre six for fuel savings of up to 3.9 per cent.
As we reported earlier, until now the HP21 transmission has been exclusively available in the four-cylinder Falcon EcoBoost models, but with the update of the Falcon to FG X and the launch of the revised SZ Mk II Territory due before the end of this year, all naturally-aspirated six-cylinder models will drive through the new transmission. Swapping out ZF's HP26 automatic in favour of the lighter HP21 – also a six-speed unit – will reduce fuel consumption by 3.9 per cent for the petrol Territory TX, or by one per cent for the TS and Titanium petrol variants. The new combined-cycle figures are 10.2L/100km (TX) and 10.5L/100km (TS/Titanium). All petrol Territory variants are rear-wheel drive only.
Fuel economy figures for the V6 diesel variants in the updated SZ Mk II range – both rear- and all-wheel drive – remain the same as for the current SZ counterparts. The diesel Territory retains the 6R80 six-speed Ford transmission. As with the Falcon, the final Territory will offer SYNC2 connectivity with Emergency Assistance, which will be standard across the range.
Ford had already announced price cuts for the Territory, but now, the Territory is also cheaper to own. According to David Wilkinson, Falcon and Territory Vehicle Line Director, Ford has concentrated its R&D efforts where the SUV was most in need of change. "Our customers love it and for the 2014 Mk II model, we've made sure to improve the SUV in the areas that matter most to our legion of owners – fuel efficiency on the petrol models and improved technology with the addition of the new SYNC2™ system across the range," Wilkinson was quoted saying in a press release.
"The 2.7-litre V6 diesel is already well known as a frugal powerplant and it's the most popular choice for our customers, but our focus was on improving the efficiency of the petrol six-cylinder, which still remains one of the smoothest engines around."
