Geely Radar RD6 ute goes global

Australia a likely target for Chinese auto giant’s all-new Radar RD6 EV pick-up bound for global markets

Chinese auto giant Geely has unveiled its Radar RD6 ute that’s a strong chance to be sold in Australia as part of a global rollout of all-new lifestyle-oriented electric vehicles.

The centrepiece of the Radar brand’s launch in China this week, the 2022 Radar RD6 dual-cab will be joined by a broad portfolio of models including, Geely says, “electric pick-up trucks, SUVs and even ATVs”.

Highly placed sources have also told carsales today that Geely has developed Radar – billed as “China’s first electric outdoors lifestyle vehicle brand” – for global consumption, although it has yet to confirm priority markets and a launch timetable.

Production and first deliveries of the Radar RD6 begin in the fourth quarter of this year at a facility in Zibo, Shandong.

Specifications for the new ute are still to be released, but the car-maker has confirmed it will offer both single- and dual-motor powertrains.

It will also be based on Geely’s pure-electric Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) that will underpin forthcoming EVs from various brands from the group including Polestar, Volvo and Lynk & Co.

The dedicated EV platform allows for efficient packaging and useful features including a front trunk and, according to Geely, a tray that includes external charging facilities.

The ute was designed by former Ford and Volvo designer Peter Horbury, who in recent years has overseen a raft of Geely Group products.

“The Radar product portfolio is focused on electric pick-up trucks and SUVs. This direction challenges us to mix functionality and usability with aesthetic form,” said Horbury.

“Our aim is to let Radar users expand their horizons and explore nature in a sustainable way.”

Geely describes Radar Auto as “a fully capable independent brand with its own R&D facility in Hangzhou”.

“The Radar brand is starting with trucks but is much more than just trucks,” the company said in a statement.

“Radar was created for a new generation of global consumers that demand vehicles that are as sustainable as their adventures into nature.

“The Radar brand is launched as an independent brand within the wider Geely Holding Group which will give the brand considerable access to full vehicle technologies and shared components for electric vehicles.”
