Genesis Australia has locked in a $145,000 plus on-road costs asking price for its battery-powered 2022 Genesis Electrified G80 sedan, placing it smack bang in the middle of the promised price range.
By far and away the most expensive G80 variant sold in Australia to date, the zero-emission large sedan carries a hefty $43,809 premium over the now-penultimate 3.5T AWD grade ($101,191 plus ORCs), but undercuts the cheapest Porsche Taycan (RWD: $158,100 plus ORCs).
There are no other large electric sedans yet available Down Under, where bigger new electric German limousines like the BMW i7 xDrive60 ($297,900 plus ORCs) and Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 ($328,400 plus ORCs) cost more than double.
But the Electrified G80 the not only the most expensive G80 so far, it’s also comfortably the most expensive Genesis product to date – out-coining the top-spec GV60 Performance Lux AWD by more than $34,000.
However, the extra outlay for the first battery-electric G80 is offset not only by an EV powertrain that’s gruntier and cheaper to service, but the addition of more standard equipment, potentially making it a more attractive chauffer vehicle.
The powertrain in question is a dual-motor arrangement churning out 272kW/700Nm, powered by an 87.2kWh lithium-ion battery offering a driving range of up to 520km on the WLTP cycle.
When it runs low on charge, the battery can be recharged from 10 to 80 per cent in 22 minutes when using a 350kW DC fast-charger, says Genesis.
All that extra torque shaves two tenths of a second off the 3.5T’s 0-100km/h time, with the Electrified G80 stopping the clock in 4.9sec.
In terms of standard equipment, the new electric luxury sedan employs a 3.5T AWD with optional luxury pack as its basis, and adds a creature comforts list as long as your arm.
Most of the toys and specification highlights were explored in depth when we drove the range newcomer on local roads in May, so for this report we’ll just focus on the admittedly few differences between the EV’s kit list and the dolled up 3.5T.
Firstly, the whole package rolls on unique 19-inch alloy wheels and dons an exclusive grille mesh and bespoke bumpers to help signal its electric identity, a point hammered home further by the solar roof.
On the inside, there’s bio-processed Nappa leather upholstery with the same ‘luxury’ quilting, EV-specific graphics on the instrument cluster and a heat pump climate control system.
Vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality is also included.
Other headlight equipment features – shared with the luxury pack-equipped V6 – include a camera-based road previewing electronically controlled suspension system, three zones for the climate control, a 19-speaker Lexicon sound system, 14.5-inch infotainment interface, soft-close doors, wood trim garnish and wireless phone charging.
The first customer Electrified G80s will arrive next month, along with the Genesis Electrified GV70 medium SUV and the dedicated-electric Genesis GV60 SUV, the arrivals of which mark the start of the Hyundai premium brand’s electric transition by 2025, according to local boss Connal Yan.
“Electrified G80 builds on the renowned luxury and appeal of G80 with its refined, zero-emission battery-electric performance, long-range and ultra-rapid charging to create a fitting range flagship,” he said.
Like all Genesis models, the newcomer is backed by a five-year/unlimited kilometre factory warranty and, in an added bonus, includes either a five-year Chargefox subscription or home AC charger and installation in its asking price.
