Genesis X Speedium Coupe flagship on the way

Fresh trademark indicates premium brand will deliver on its promise of an electric performance coupe

The Hyundai Group could be about to add a flagship electric coupe to its portfolio in the form of the Genesis X Speedium Coupe, which is expected to be the production version of the sleek 2021 Genesis X Concept.

Uncovered by a GVForums user, a new trademark application for the ‘Genesis X Speedium Coupe’ name has been filed by Hyundai Motor Company with IP Australia.

Lodged with Australia’s trademark watchdog exclusively under Class 12 (automobiles; parts and fittings for automobiles; sports cars; coupes), the filing suggests the flagship Genesis two-door could still be a little way off yet, but that there are definitely plans for a Genesis-branded coupe.

Genesis has not offered a coupe since it became Hyundai’s standalone luxury brand in late 2015, but the idea of a two-door Genesis flagship for the Australian market has been on the cards for years.

Two previous concepts have heightened local appetites, including the aforementioned Genesis X Concept and preceding Genesis Essentia concept.

Of the two, the X Concept appeared to be the more production-ready due to its not quite so outlandish styling and the fact it is newer; Genesis had long intended to launch a production version of the Essentia in 2021 but instead the world got the X Concept.

It still isn’t clear whether this all-electric two-door concept rides on the Hyundai Motor Group’s latest e-GMP dedicted-EV platform or an adapted version of the Genesis G80 architecture, which has already proven to be compatible with a fully-electric drivetrain.

But it’s likely the X Speedium Coupe will be underpinned by the e-GMP platform as per the rest of the Hyundai Group’s purpose-built EVs.

It’s difficult to pin down a timeline on a vehicle that’s yet to be officially confirmed for production, but we anticipate the electric Genesis coupe to be with us sometime before 2025 and the emergence of Hyundai’s all-new integrated modular architecture.

Regardless of its basis, it’s safe to assume the X Speedium Coupe will be one of the most powerful and fastest models yet to appear from the Hyundai group.

The upcoming 430kW/740Nm all-wheel drive Kia EV6 GT , which is claimed to hit 100km/h in just 3.5sec, has already proven what the e-GMP platform is capable of and there’s little doubt the EV platform is capable of even more.

Genesis has already promised to launch six new all-electric models globally between now and 2030, comprising two passenger cars (sedans, coupes and wagons) and four SUVs.

There’s every chance a coupe accounts for one of those two planned passenger vehicles.
