GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: New Hyundai i30 Wagon teased

Korean marque’s new small load-lugger set for 2019 release

Hyundai has shown a first glimpse of its new i30 Wagon, weeks out from the car’s official debut at the Geneva motor show.

The cryptic image gives little away about the small Korean wagon, except to say it will adopt the increasingly coupe-driven style of modern tourers or estates.

Up front and inside, the next i30 Wagon will embrace much of the new styling found on the i30 hatch due to go on sale in Australia in April. A lengthened rear overhang, longer roof, new tailgate and re-shaped tail-lights will complement a significant lift in rear interior space.

According to Thomas Burkle, Hyundai’s chief European designer, the i30 Wagon will exhibit coupe-driven styling – reflecting the tastes of its European home market. The wagon is expected to be built in the Czech Republic.

“The new generation i30 Wagon speaks the language of the i30 family in terms of design, and it carries the new Hyundai family identity -- the cascading grille,” he said.

“The tapering roofline and the dynamic proportions give the Wagon an almost coupé-like silhouette. The sleek and dynamic profile is further emphasised by a rich chrome frame surrounding the side windows.”

While the current i30 Wagon was quietly discontinued in Australia last year, motoring.com.au understands the replacement is due for release here in early 2019.
