GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Maserati GranTurismo “special edition”

The 2017 Geneva motor show has been a lot of different things to a lot of different car makers. For Maserati, it was a simple wheels and paint exercise.

The Italian car maker used the Swiss show to unveil special editions of the ageing GranTurismo coupe and GranCabrio convertible. Maserati has confirmed 400 “special edition” units globally, each paying tribute to the 60th anniversary of the original 3500GT.

Using the same mechanical layout as the now 10-year-old GranTurismo and matching GranCabrio convertible, the “special edition” features three-layered paint, 20-inch alloy wheels in a new design, special edition logos on the wheel centre caps, distinctive front central air intakes and two rear air vents, and other carbon fibre touches across the front splitter, door handles, side mirrors and rear lip spoiler.

Inside, both models receive new leather or leather/alcantara interior schemes, added carbon fibre, and unique door sills matched by a plate designating the model’s 400-unit production run.

With a delay to the new Giorgio platform - Maserati's new Alfa Romeo-based architecture  – it is understood the “special edition” GranTurismo and GranCabrio will represent the extent of change to Maserati’s sports car line-up for 2017.

Both 'Gran' models are expected to reach Australian showrooms later this year.

Maserati also used the 2017 Geneva Motor Show to present a Levante SUV with a "new conceptual Ermenegildo Zegna 100% silk fabric" upholstered cabin.

Maserati says Zegna developed the fabric specially for Maserati, for "a heightened soft touch effect, in a new beige colour". The Chevron beige silk fabric is combined with full premium beige leather on the front and rear seats. In addition, the same new beige silk fabric with a “Nattè” pattern, is used "to enrich the interior door panels", while a “Jersey” pattern features on roof lining and sun visors.
