GENEVA MOTOR SHOW: Subaru teases next-gen WRX wagon

Japanese car maker spins-off wagon version of Viziv Performance STI, could be on sale as soon as 2019

Subaru has announced it will unveil a wagon version of its well-received Viziv at the Geneva motor show next month.

The new concept, called the Viziv Tourer was teased last night with a single shadowy image, is set to be a replacement for the current WRX wagon.

Based on the Viziv Performance Concept that was revealed last October at the Tokyo motor show, the small wagon is expected to feature the sedan's striking design cues and share its dimensions.

That means the Viziv Tourer should measure in at 4630mm long, 1950mm wide and 1430mm high – around 70mm longer than the current generation Impreza, with most of the gain accounted by the concept's longer wheelbase, that is stretched by 60mm compared to the current car.

Like the Viziv Performance Concept and the hotter STI version shown at the Tokyo Auto Salon, the replacement for the WRX will be based on an updated version of the SGP (Subaru Global Platform) architecture that underpins the current Impreza family. The platform was created by engineers, from the off, to be modular hence being able to cope with the Viziv's longer wheelbase.

As well as being lighter and far more structurally rigid than the car maker's past underpinnings the SGP will also allow the Japanese car maker to embed its next-generation driver assist technology into the production version of the Viziv.

This includes Subaru's EyeSight technology that will allow, by 2020, drivers to switch to a semi-autonomous cruise control.

Under the bonnet, expect to find a range of turbocharged flat-four cylinder 'boxer' engines but, according to recent reports, some versions could come with more conventional in-line fours for the first time.

That's because the car maker is likely to to buy in its hybrid powertrains from rivals like Toyota.

All will be revealed (hopefully) at the Geneva show.
