The 2016 Geneva motor show will be home to several new small SUVs, including the new Toyota CH-R, Holden Trax, Volkswagen T-Cross and now, it seems, the next XV from Subaru.
The Japanese car-maker has teased a computer rendering of some of the front-end of the vehicle, revealing what appears to be a far more stylised and rugged vehicle than just a mid-life facelift.
It's possible the new XV concept is a preview of a spin-off vehicle, one that has less visual connection to the Impreza on which the regular XV is based.
So what does this mean for the Subaru SUV family?
It's too early to say and Subaru is keeping mum on the details, but it's possible the brand is looking to hatch a new model to plug yet another gap in the ever-expanding small SUV segment.
As it stands, the Subaru XV was the fifth highest-selling small SUV in Australia for the month of January 2016, with 654 sales or 8.4 per cent segment market share.
The top-seller was the Mitsubishi ASX, with 1393 sales (17.9%), followed by the Mazda CX-3's 1391 sales (17.9%), Nissan QASHQAI's 1161 units (14.9%) filling out of the sales podium. Fourth spot in the sales race was taken by the Honda HR-V with 882 sales, for an 11.3 per cent market share.
Models such as the ASX and QASHQAI could well be what the new Subaru XV concept is targeting, so stay tuned for more details closer to the Geneva motor show, which kicks off on March 1.
