Zeekr Australia is keen to see some ‘specialisation’ options materialise for its versatile new 7X medium SUV, but don’t go expecting any special editions or additional variants.
The 2025 Zeekr 7X is still a couple of weeks away from local showrooms and yet its creators are already looking at ways to broaden its appeal, primarily through the release of genuine accessories.
Speaking to carsales at the 7X’s local media launch, Zeekr Australia product boss Melvyn Low largely ruled out the possibility of a hotter and/or more capable version of the budding Tesla Model Y rival, but said he had plenty of ideas for some “specialisations”.
“I want to introduce, maybe specialisations, something different,” he said before reiterating the current priority was ensuring customer satisfaction.
“Down the track, there’s a lot of opportunities – I have a lot of ideas.
“Obviously we’ve demonstrated a bit of trail [capability] on today’s course, so there can be a lot of ideas created around how the vehicle’s used; obviously offering accessories, different types of accessories, helps.”
Low was quick to point out the accessories wouldn’t yield a special edition or new variant, but rather provide new and unorthodox ways to experience the vehicle.
The 7X is something of an outlier amongst its peers in that the halo Performance AWD offers genuine soft-roading capability thanks to its height-adjustable air suspension which provides up to 232mm of ground clearance – none of its Model Y Performance, Mustang Mach-E GT, IONIQ 5 N or EV6 GT competition can handle more than a groomed gravel road.
Details or hints as to what we could expect are being kept firmly under lock and key, but smaller diameter wheels, taller and chunkier tyres, roof baskets, roof racks and a tow bar would all make a good amount of sense and wouldn’t be too hard to conjure up in the near future.
Whether or not any performance goodies like angrier brake pads or stickier tyres will be thrown in is even less clear, however they would make sense given the dynamic talent of the 7X Performance AWD’s halo competition.
Low didn’t reference or hint as much in the slightest, but did say customer feedback would be used to help shape future model year updates.
“There’s a lot of potential; the car space and development, especially for updates, especially from overseas, is relatively fast,” he said.
“We’ll gather what the customers have experienced, listen to their ideas, and then we can say ‘look, maybe there are improvements we can make’.
“The vehicle’s just launched, so, [we’re] not really looking at doing anything at the moment (re changes) … the next question for us is how do we maintain that momentum and ensure the first 2000 customers have a good experience with the vehicle and have good ownership.”
