The Tesla Model Y-fighting 2024 BYD Sea Lion 07 has splashed ashore, debuting at the Guangzhou motor show today.
Not yet confirmed for Australia, the Sea Lion 07 is the latest in a flurry of mid-size SUVs from BYD including the Seal U – which we recently spotted testing in Australia – as well as the Song L and Song Plus.
Today’s debut was the first time the Sea Lion has been seen in the metal after being teased in sketches in the lead-up to the show.
Styled under the direction of former Audi design guru Wolfgang Egger, the Sea Lion 07’s appearance is inspired by the BYD Ocean-X concept.
It was notable at the Guangzhou launch the display car’s windows were blacked out and no interior images were shown.
The Sea Lion 07 sits on the same 2930mm wheelbase as the Song L fastback SUV that debuted in China last month, but measures up 10mm shorter overall at 4830mm, 25mm narrower at 1925mm and sits 60mm higher at 1620mm.
The size comparison to the Song L is relevant because the Sea Lion 07 is expected to be priced lower – at least in China.
And seeing it’s a Tesla Model Y fighter, for comparison’s sake the top-selling EV comes in at 4751mm long, 1978mm wide, 1624mm high and has a 2890mm wheelbase. So the Sea Lion is longer, narrower, almost exactly the same height and has a longer wheelbase.
The Sea Lion 07 joins the Song L and a whole group of other BYD models including the locally available Dolphin, Atto 3 and Seal by being based on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 architecture.
That suggests both single- and dual-motor options will be available, with power potentially up to 385kW, and the choice of two relatively big batteries – 72kWh or 87kWh.
The Sea Lion 07 is reported to include Cell to Body battery integration, reducing the pack’s impact on interior vertical space by 10mm.
It will also feature an intelligent body control system called Disus-C, which is reportedly exclusive to BYD BEV models.
In Chins the Sea Lion 07 is priced from the equivalent of about $42,600 to $55,400. It is the latest member of what BYD calls its Ocean series, alongside the Seagull (not sold here), Dolphin and Seal.
There are further Sea Lion iterations expected apart from the 07, turning it into a family – or maybe a colony or a raft, as a group of sea lions are known in the wild – of cars.
