The Finer Details

The updated GWM Cannon Alpha is taking aim at established dual-cab utes such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux with a new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, increased torque and competitive drive-away pricing.

The range opens with the Cannon Alpha Lux at $58,990 drive-away, while the flagship Vanta is priced at $63,990 drive-away.

GWM is also offering an introductory $2000 drive-away cash bonus or fuel card for customers who purchase before October 30.

The new four-cylinder turbo-diesel produces 170kW and 620Nm, giving it more torque than the 600Nm produced by the Ford Ranger V6 and considerably more than the 500Nm available from the Toyota HiLux.

Despite its output, the Cannon Alpha claims fuel consumption of 7.3L/100km and does not require AdBlue. Towing capacity remains 3,500kg with a braked trailer.

The Lux is equipped with a 14.6-inch 2K central touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, faux-leather seats, 360-degree driver assistance technology and centre and rear differential locks.

The Vanta adds a front differential lock, giving it three locking differentials in total, along with Nappa leather trim, heated, ventilated and massaging front seats, a panoramic sunroof, 10-speaker audio and a 60/40 split tailgate.

GWM says the new diesel engine was developed with Australian driving conditions in mind, while the Cannon Alpha’s suspension and dynamic set-up have been tuned locally under the guidance of former Holden chassis engineer Rob Trubiani.

The ute has undergone tens of thousands of kilometres of Australian testing, including in the Outback and Victorian High Country.

The Road Ahead

The updated GWM Cannon Alpha will arrive in Australian showrooms from mid-September 2026, expanding the brand’s challenge to established dual-cab utes with a high-output diesel engine and drive-away pricing below $60,000.

How much does the GWM Cannon Alpha cost?
Lux – $58,990
Vanta – $63,990
