GWM Cannon Vanta ute styles up

Familiar Vanta trim level adds a heap of purposeful-looking cosmetic touches to Chinese workhorse

GWM Australia has added another stylised ‘Vanta’ flagship variant to its model range, this time within the GWM Ute line-up in the form of the 2022 GWM Cannon Vanta.

Priced from $46,490 drive-away, the new Vanta shares the bulk of its kit list with the established Cannon-X flagship but rolls on gloss black 18-inch alloys and flaunts a black grille, mirror caps, door-handles and exterior badging.

An extended black sports bar rounds out the darkened cosmetic touches, which add an even $1000 to the donor vehicle’s asking price.

The usual silver roof rails are gone, but equipment highlights beyond the styling changes include heated front seats, leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, a 360-degree camera, 7.0-inch digital instrument cluster, auto-dimming rear-view mirror and three selectable power assist steering modes.

Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian and bicycle detection, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition head up the active safety suite, which last year garnered the GWM Ute a full five-star ANCAP safety rating.

No changes have been made to the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine hiding under the bonnet, meaning the familiar peak power and torque figures (120kW/400Nm) as well as the 3500kg braked towing capacity are all maintained.

The Vanta’s black styling cues can be contrasted against Pearl White, Blue Sapphire, Scarlet Red or Pittsburgh Silver body paint, or customers can go down the full stealth route with Crystal Black.

“The GWM Ute range today welcomes a new member with the addition of the stylish new Cannon Vanta,” said GWM Australia.

“Sitting proudly at the head of the GWM Ute range, the Cannon Vanta adds a number of styling enhancements to make it stand out from the crowd… creating a bold front look that means business.”

As with every GWM product, the Cannon Vanta is backed by a seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.

Local pricing for the rest of the GWM Ute dual-cab pick-up range has risen another $1000 and now starts from $35,990 drive-away for the entry-level Cannon manual.

How much does the 2022 GWM Ute cost?

Cannon (a) – $38,990
Cannon-L – $42,490
Cannon-X (a) – $45,490
