GWM Tank 300 PHEV confirmed for Oz

Plug-in hybrid off-road SUV will arrive Down Under next year and could deliver a whopping 750Nm of petrol-electric torque

The News

A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the GWM Tank 300 will touch down in Australia early next year, where it’ll be offered alongside hybrid and internal combustion versions of the off-road SUV, and rival the upmarket Denza B5, also due on sale early 2026.

The Key Details

  • GWM Tank 300 Hi4-T Hybrid confirmed for Australia
  • PHEV is due in Q1 2026 to join petrol, diesel and hybrid offerings
  • 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol with electric motor and battery
  • 3000kg braked towing, low-range transfer case and mechanical 4x4 system

The Finer Details

The Chinese carmaker’s electrified portfolio is expanding with the 2026 GWM Tank 300 PHEV, due in local showrooms in the first quarter of next year.

Powering the PHEV is the brand’s Hi4-T system already offered in the Cannon Alpha ute and Tank 500, comprising a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, combined with an electric motor and battery that are yet to be detailed.

Yet to be locked in are performance figures; however, the Tank 300 PHEV offered with the same powertrain overseas delivers 300kW and 750Nm – the same outputs produced by the larger Tank 500 PHEV currently offered Down Under.

That means it could also offer around 100km of electric-only driving range and fuel consumption as low as 2.1-litre per 100km when the battery and fuel tank are full. However, all will be revealed closer to the SUV’s arrival.

The PHEV Tank 300 is expected to top the range and although GWM is yet to reveal pricing, it has committed to offering “genuine off-road” capability, including a mechanical four-wheel drive system, low-range transfer case and locking differentials.

It’ll also bring vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality to power up appliances at a campsite, for example.

The Road Ahead

Local pricing and specifications will be revealed closer to the new GWM Tank 300 PHEV’s launch; however, the Chinese carmaker is now taking expressions of interest for the new variant.
