Hi-po Hybrid launched Down Under

Lexus has launched its most powerful hybrid yet

Toyota-owned prestige brand Lexus has launched the GS450h hybrid Down Under. The launch took place at Bathurst (NSW) yesterday and marks the introduction of the maker's most powerful 'green' vehicle yet.

Lexus says the luxury car will "revolutionise" the automotive landscape.

Based on the marque's existing GS300, the GS450h combines a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with a high-output electric motor. According to the automaker, it has 22 per cent more power than the next most powerful model in the Lexus range and produces more power from its electric motor than many medium cars (147kW).

The GS450h sprints to 100km/h in approximately 6.0sec, however, its combined fuel economy is 7.9lt/100km says Lexus. The car is said to be the world's first volume-production rear-drive hybrid.

Lexus recently paraded its flagship LS600h hybrid limo at the New York Auto Show.

CarPoint will publish its launch review of the $121,990 GS450h next week.
