Social media chatter has uncovered a subtle undercurrent of disapproval among some Honda performance fans over the new 2023 Honda Civic Type R’s styling, so popular graphic designer X-Tomi Design has mocked up a couple of renders imagining a Type R coupe and wagon.
The coupe render was actually released the very same day the new hot hatch broke cover and will undoubtedly remind some readers of the old DC5 Honda Integra Type R with its slippery two-door shape, massive rear wing and angry V-TEC engine.
Despite losing its rear doors, all of the new Type R’s signature styling cues have been retained in the coupe render, with the only definitive change being the elongated front door – even the roof and window lines have been left completely alone.
Some may deem this render to be more Integra-like than the reborn Integra itself, which now features four doors, a fastback body style and an Acura badge.
Both the new Type R and Acura Integra are undoubtedly eye-catching (for better or worse), but it’s the rendered Honda Civic Type R ‘Tourer’ that’s really grabbed our attention.
Compact performance wagons have always had a cult following and realistically there’s only a handful of them within a JDM context; the Subaru WRX, Mitsubishi Evo IX and Mitsubishi Galant VR-4.
The iconic Audi RS 2 Avant also springs to mind when talking about fast compact five-doors of yesteryear, but the Porsche-developed wagon belonged to a completely different market, price point and, in some ways, era.
Back to the rendered Type R load-lugger and the roofline has obviously been raised at the rear to create the wagon shape, which in turn stretches and squares off the rear of the glasshouse.
A set of black roof rails underscores the car’s identity as a wagon, but Type R fans will be thrilled to see the huge rear wing has been kept and simply moved higher up the tailgate.
The wagon has garnered a bit more positive feedback in the comments section than the coupe, however, there are still purists out there demanding the Civic Type R be left exclusively as a hatchback.
Thankfully for them these renders are unofficial, but the prospect of one of the world’s hottest mainstream hot hatch becoming available in more than one body style is undeniably appealing, especially since similar renders of a Toyota GR Corolla sedan, wagon and three-door hatch have also been created…
