Honda Civic with diesel power due in April

Local launch just two months away for Honda's Civic hatch powered by 1.6-litre oiler
Honda has scored a coup with its Civic Hatch diesel. Powered by a 1.6-litre diesel the new variant in the Civic Hatch range develops a healthy 300Nm (and 88kW), but uses just 4.0L/100km in combined-cycle testing.
And priced at $26,990 the new model is cheaper than the Mazda3 in either diesel or SP20 SKYACTIV form, as well as any of the hybrid models in Honda's own range. So the Civic diesel seems priced right – if you turn a blind eye to Hyundai's i30 diesel – and merits serious consideration by prospective buyers who are concerned for the environment as well as the hip pocket.
The i-DTEC engine, which was developed under the auspices of Honda's Earth Dreams Technology program, produces 105g/km, which is very close to double digits, where engines will need to be in order to meet future emissions legislation. Sourced from Europe, along with the rest of the car, the diesel has been developed for optimal weight and compact size.
If there's one stumbling block to broader market acceptance for the Civic diesel when it arrives, it's the six-speed manual transmission that will be the exclusive transmission available with the car in Australia.
Standard features for the Civic Hatch DTi-S, as it shall be known, will include: Magic seats, a tyre deflation warning system, daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, auto stop/idle stop, Hill Start Assist, auto headlights and wipers, dual zone climate control, ECON Mode and Intelligent Multi-Information Display. Like other Civic models, the diesel variant will reach the local market rated five stars for safety by local crash safety test authority, ANCAP.
"This all-new 1.6 litre i DTEC turbo diesel engine is a first for Honda in Australia," said Stephen Collins, Honda Australia Director and General Manager Sales and Marketing, as quoted in a press release issued by the importer.
"Earth Dreams Technology was created from an awareness of rising fuel prices combined with increasingly stringent environmental performance targets. This new generation of powertrains brings advanced driving performance and low emissions within reach of our customers."
