An all-new Honda CR-V is on the starting blocks, so the Japanese brand has bolstered the 2022 Honda CR-V line-up with the addition of two new special-edition variants designed to keep sales ticking along as the aging mid-size SUV enters the twilight of its current lifecycle.
Priced from $43,700 and $44,600 drive-away respectively, the Honda CR-V VTi 7 +Luxe and Honda CR-V Black Edition slot straight into the middle of the local CR-V range and use the VTi trim level as the basis for their spruced-up packages.
Starting with the VTi 7 +Luxe, Honda Australia chief Stephen Collins said the new variant is “one of the most affordable leather trim offerings in the medium SUV segment and will appeal to family buyers who want seven-seat capacity with added luxury features”.
These luxury features include leather-appointed trim, heated front seats and an eight-way power adjustable driver’s seat with two-position memory function, in addition to the dual-zone climate control, four USB ports, multi-angle reversing camera and tyre pressure monitoring as found on the standard VTi 7.
Five paint colours are available for the VTi 7 +Luxe – Ignite Red, Cosmic Blue, Lunar Silver, Meteoroid Grey and Platinum White pearlescent – while drive continues to come from a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.
As with every force-fed CR-V, the resulting 140kW/240Nm is sent to the driving wheels (front in this case) via a continuously variable transmission.
The same set-up propels the new Black Edition, Honda’s take on a Darth Vader-spec SUV.
Based on the five-seat VTi, the Black Edition is decked-out with black exterior and interior touches as well as extra equipment, so much so that Honda describes it as “one of the most comprehensively equipped special edition packages Honda has ever released”.
Some of the bespoke gear includes black 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights with active cornering function, LED foglights, leather-appointed trim with embroidered Black Edition logos, heated front seats, rear privacy glass, piano-black and dark wood interior trim, dark chrome body trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and black roof lining.
Unlike the VTi 7 +Luxe, the Black Edition is only available in two colours (Crystal Black and Platinum White pearlescent), offering buyers the full Vader experience or a more eye-catching contrasting look.
Both variants feature keyless entry and start, a 7.0-inch infotainment interface and smartphone mirroring, as well as the Honda Sensing suite of driver-assist and safety technologies.
“The CR-V continues to be a popular choice for private buyers in the medium SUV segment, offering a broad range of equipment and trim levels to cater to the specific needs of customers, across both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, and with five-seat and seven-seat layouts,” Collins said.
“The two new special editions raise the level of style and sophistication on offer in the CR-V range even further, with a focus on design elements and luxury features, while still delivering outstanding value for money to customers in the market for a new SUV.”
An all-new Honda CR-V is expected to arrive in Australia sometime next year, so it’s likely these won’t be the only special-edition variants of the current generation to emerge over the next 12 months or so.
