Honda redoubles Takata airbag recalls

Honda Australia has announced multiple recalls for another 26,000 Takata airbags installed in locally-sold cars. And some of those cars have already been recalled the once for airbag replacement.

The Civic from 2000 was recalled in 2010, in accordance with a program 5SD. But without the extent of the Takata airbag scandal being known at the time, many of those cars had their airbags replaced with other faulty airbags.

To rectify that original recall, Honda Australia has issued a new recall notice – 6SD – for the Civics affected to return to authorised dealers for new passenger-side airbags to be fitted… again. Just under 600 cars (592) are subject to this latest recall notice.

At the same time, Honda Australia has issued three other recall notices – 6CB, 6DB and 6EB – which are also for passenger-side Takata airbags.

Other than the Civic from 2000, all the vehicles affected by these new recalls were built in 2012 as follows: Jazz (15,535 units sold), City (1426), Accord (2656), Accord Euro (4804), Insight (233) and Legend (36). Some of these vehicles have already been recalled to have the driver's airbag replaced, since they were all sold in Australia after news of the Takata scandal had broken, but it was not known at the time that the passenger-side airbag needed to be replaced as well.

Customers are encouraged to contact Honda's Recall Contact Centre on 1800 789 839 between 8.30am and 6pm weekdays if in any doubt as to whether the recalls apply to their particular vehicle.

Honda Australia claims a 50 per cent airbag replacement completion rate so far. The company's dealer network has replaced more than 330,000 airbags out of the 650,376 understood to be affected. Dealers are turning around 5000 airbag replacements a week.

It has now reached the stage where airbag replacement figures for the entire industry are unclear. Cars probably number above one million by now, since some have had both driver and passenger-side airbags replaced.
