Honda releases HR-V and City special-editions

Japanese brand announces limited-edition compact sedan and SUV in Australia

Honda is rolling out new enhanced-valued models based on the light-segment City sedan and the small soft-roader, the HR-V.

For the latter, Honda has boosted the equipment list with $3200 worth of extra features for just $1500. Based on the entry-level HR-V VTi variant ($24,990), the limited-edition vehicle adds 17-inch alloy wheels, side steps, rear-parking sensors and front fog lights. It's priced at $26,490.

The Honda City limited-edition is $1600 more expensive than the model it's based on, the range-topping VTI-L automatic variant, but adds $4000 worth of extras. These include the Modulo Sports Pack body kit accessories, which consist of front and rear spoilers, side skirts, rear spoiler and sports grille. Rear parking sensors are also fitted to the limited-edition model.

"Over the years, Honda's Limited Edition models have provided a strong value proposition for customers cross-shopping against other brands," said Honda Australia Director, Stephen Collins.

"After strong customer interest and the success of this year's CR-V Limited Edition, we're now extending the offer across the City and popular HR-V," he said.

As with all Honda vehicles, the limited-edition models are covered by a three-year, 100,000km warranty, with six-year rust perforation cover and a three-year paint warranty.

Honda is currently sitting about 1000 sales behind last year's tally, in year-to-date numbers. The limited-edition models appear to be aimed at improving sales momentum for the brand as a whole, as well as raising awareness of the City, which is languishing in the light-car doldrums and is clearly in dire need of a special-edition to attract more buyers.

Its sales have dropped 37 per cent year on year, to 853 units for the first six months of 2016, with less than a two per cent share of the segment.

In contrast, the HR-V is the third highest selling small SUV in Australia, with 6744 sold in the first six months of 2016, for a 13 per cent share of the segment.

Honda Limited Edition pricing:
Honda City LE -- $22,990 plus on-road costs
Honda HR-V LE -- $26,490 ($28,490 drive-away)
